US Patent Office features Technoir founder Bryant in series on innovation

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office featured Dr. Robert Bryant, inventor, NASA scientist and founder of Technoir, in its Journeys of Innovation series, which shares the stories of innovators and entrepreneurs whose work has made a positive difference in the world.
Titled “A Visionary With Heart,” the in-depth profile traces Bryant's path from a child who struggled in school because of an undiagnosed visual impairment to a NASA scientist, prolific inventor and 2023 inductee into the National Inventors Hall of Fame.
The USPTO feature highlights not only Bryant's accomplishments, but also the persistence and unconventional thinking behind them.

An Unexpected Discovery With a Life-Saving Impact
Among the innovations featured is Bryant's development of Langley Research Center-Soluble Imide (LaRC-SI), an advanced polymer that grew out of research for NASA's High Speed Civil Transport project.
Bryant recognized unusual and potentially valuable properties in the experimental material even though it ultimately was not selected for the aircraft project. Rather than abandoning the technology, he continued pursuing other potential applications.
That persistence eventually took the NASA-developed polymer somewhere very different from its original intended destination: inside the human body.
LaRC-SI's combination of durability, flexibility, solvent resistance and biological compatibility made it suitable for insulating the thin wires used in pacemakers. After extensive testing and development for its medical application, the material received FDA approval in 2010. According to the USPTO, the technology has since benefited more than half a million heart patients.
More Than Three Decades of Innovation
The USPTO profile also explores a career that has produced more than 30 patents, peer-reviewed journal articles and more than 100 technical papers covering a wide range of technologies and materials.
Yet Bryant's approach to innovation is notably practical. He describes his own focus as occupying the space between pure research and the marketplace — the hands-on work required to transform an idea into something that can actually be manufactured and used.
That philosophy is also central to Technoir, where Bryant and a network of accomplished subject matter experts help organizations solve complex technical problems involving materials, manufacturing, testing, product development, commercialization and other specialized challenges.
