BIOGRAPHY
Stanley “Grey” Hash III is a published writer, editor and artist specializing in illustration, 3D printing, CAD, animation and game design.
He is a multidisciplinary animation educator and digital media specialist with two decades of experience in higher education, applied visualization, and interactive content development. Mr. Hash holds a Bachelors in Fine Arts (BFA) and General Studies (BGS) from Virginia Commonwealth University (1999) and a Masters of Fine Arts (MFA) from the San Francisco Institute of Fine Art (2005) with additional independent coursework from Los Angeles Academy of Figurative Art (2013).
Supplementing his academic credentials, Mr. Hash has maintained an active presence in toy design, game design and animation while working for a variety of clients on both sides of the country. From 2016 to 2023, he served as a full-time animation instructor at Virginia Commonwealth University, where he led instruction in 3D modeling, character animation, lighting and rendering, and production workflows. In this capacity, he developed and delivered curriculums designed to prepare students for professional environments that demand both creative problem-solving and technological fluency in both game design and visual effects.
Previous instructional appointments include the New York Film Academy, the Los Angeles Film School, and the Art Institute of North Hollywood. His academic interests extend into applied research and interdisciplinary collaboration. He continues to explore the role of animation and digital design in domains such as educational technology, game and toy design, and immersive environments.
As an Autodesk Certified Instructor in both Maya and 3D Studio Max, his professional practice outside academia spans a broad range of applications. Mr. Hash contributed as a game asset artist to the virtual reality title Here They Lie (Tangentlemen, 2015), and collaborated with IMD Toys on animated content for major licensors such as Disney and Mattel. His work in data visualization includes contract animation for Dialectica and Hashfast, where he transformed complex datasets into accessible and visually coherent animated content for strategic communications.
As an illustrator and muralist, he completed commissioned works for Amber Ox Brewery and Triangle Restaurant, integrating environmental storytelling into public space design. Mr. Hash has built stages for festivals and various shows, including the Altria in Richmond, VA. In some cases, Mr. Grey has designed and projected animation for those shows and currently designs animation for musicians in Virginia Beach. In addition to designing stages, he leverages photogrammetry / 3D scan data to help create toys, 3D characters and realistic digital landscapes.
His career reflects a commitment to bridging artistic vision with technical precision across domains ranging from entertainment media and game design, to data visualization and educational technology. He has served as technical editor on multiple advanced VFX publications by Lee Lanier, contributing to the refinement of pedagogical resources in computer graphics education.
He is also a recipient of the NVIDIA Illustration Award presented at SIGGRAPH, the premier international conference on computer graphics and interactive techniques. Throughout his career, Mr. Hash has consistently sought to integrate pedagogical rigor with professional applicability, preparing emerging creators to operate at the leading edge of digital production.
